The Presiding Officer of the Welsh Local Government Association has paid tribute to Lord Dafydd Elis-Thomas, one of Wales’ most recognisable politicians over half a century, who has died at the age of 78.
Councillor Lis Burnett, WLGA Presiding Officer:
“Lord Dafydd Elis-Thomas’ influence on politics and public life in Wales cannot be overestimated. He was a friend of local government who was consistently vociferous in his defence of the essential role of local authorities within the national constitutional framework.
“Dafydd’s resolute commitment to his people, nation, and language guided his time as a formidable Member of Parliament and Assembly Member. As the inaugural Presiding Officer of the-then National Assembly, now known as the Senedd, Dafydd Elis-Thomas will forever be recognised as one of the key architects of devolution and modern Wales. Dafydd Êl has bequeathed Wales a towering legacy which will endure.
“On behalf of the Welsh Local Government Association, I extend my deepest sympathy to Dafydd’s family at this very sad time.”
