The Welsh Local Government Association (WLGA) has sincerely thanked council workers responding to the devastation wrought across Wales by Storm Bert.

Atrocious weather conditions were seen in vast parts of the country, leading to widespread disruption including severe flooding in many areas.

Residents are advised to heed local updates in their areas as services and infrastructure are severely disrupted. Flood warnings remain in place in some areas.

Councillor Andrew Morgan OBE, WLGA Leader said:

“Council workers, alongside colleagues in emergency services, have been working tirelessly around the clock in ferocious weather conditions to respond to the devastating impacts of the storm. 

“As well as cleaning culverts, clearing fallen trees, distributing sandbags and responding to emergencies, we have seen tireless crews go above and beyond to set up and tend to emergency rest centres, keep vital services open, and to ensure residents’ safety. I would like to sincerely thank all of them for their hard work and tireless efforts. They will also be integral as our communities seek to recover and rebuild in the weeks and months ahead. Once more, in very difficult circumstances, we’ve clearly seen the true value of our local councils.

“Residents are reminded that flood warnings remain in force in some areas. There is also significant disruption due to severe damage to infrastructure and road closures in place. I would advise everyone to check their local authority website for any updates.

“I have spoken to both the Prime Minister and the First Minister to outline the scale of the impacts. Although it is still too early to be able to fully assess the damage caused, it is clearly highly likely to be substantial. The WLGA will work closely and rapidly with the Welsh and UK governments to explore what help is available to councils to support recovery and reconstruction efforts.”
