Councils at the heart of Wales’ nation of sanctuary

Wednesday, 12 February 2025

The Welsh Local Government Association (WLGA) welcomes the Welsh Government’s commitment to strengthening Wales as a nation of sanctuary as part of the refreshed Anti Racist Wales Action Plan.  All Welsh councils have helped refugees, asylum seekers, and unaccompanied children and young people settle into communities as part of the 'Team Wales' approach.

Local government has welcomed the 56-day asylum move-on pilot, with the aim to prevent homelessness and helping to introduce a Welcome Ticket scheme to reduce social isolation. The introduction of ten principles to guide this work will help ensure that those seeking sanctuary receive the support they need to feel welcome, safe and part of Welsh communities, as well as to enable people to contribute to society.

However, councils are under significant financial pressure and continue to highlight to the Home Office the need for long-term funding certainty to continue providing appropriate services and support to those arriving in Wales.

Cllr Mary Ann Brocklesby, WLGA spokesperson for social justice said:

“Welsh councils play a vital role in supporting refugees and asylum seekers, helping them settle, access services, and contribute to their new communities. Local authorities have been at the forefront of delivering key schemes, including Homes for Ukraine and the Afghan Resettlement Programme, ensuring Wales remains a nation of sanctuary.

"Misinformation and abuse directed at organisations supporting the most vulnerable in our society undermines the vital work being done to help people rebuild their lives. We stand in solidarity with councils, charities, and communities across Wales as they work tirelessly to ensure people seeking sanctuary are treated fairly, with dignity and respect.
