WLGA End of Term Report 2012 - 2017

Some of the WLGA’s key achievements over the course of the last Council term, spanning the period 2012-2017.

Some highlights from the Report:

  • The WLGA has secured additional investment in social services by taking an evidence-based approach to highlighting the significant financial pressures facing the social care and the impact of under-funding on vulnerable people and other public services, such as health
  • WLGA has successfully argued that education is best delivered through a democratic framework of local accountability and that for that reason a comprehensive education should stay within local government. The WLGA therefore seeks to influence strategy nationally and support authorities in creating the capacity locally to deliver improvement andraise standards
  • Over a five-year period WLGA led the local government response to the local government reform debate, liaising with the Williams Commission, developing proposals for combined authorities and opposing proposals for the wholesale mergers of authorities, given this undermined local accountability and was not a fully costed proposal
  • The WLGA developed byelaws for use by local government, now approved by the Cabinet Secretary for Environment and Rural Affairs
  • The WLGA has supported the development of national and regional collaboratives with the aim of improving services and outcomes and/or increasing efficiencies and value for money. In 2014 the National Adoption Service was launched
  • The WLGA has supported local authorities in responding to the humanitarian crisis following conflicts in Syria and the surrounding regions and all 22 local authorities have received families under the Syrian Resettlement Programme, with over 400 refugees having been resettled in Wales to date
